As we age, the imperfections show in our faces. Facial lines, wrinkles and folds are a normal part of the ageing process which makes us look more tired, angry or older than we really are. Skin structure changes with time and destruction of tissue cells becomes greater than its production. Our skin becomes more fragile, less elastic and flexible. The hyaluronic acid (HA) content of our skin, which is important for water retention, decreases and the oil-producing (sebaceous) glands and sweat glands become less active making your skin drier and less supple. The skin also loses fat, so it looks less plump and smooth. As a result, the skin becomes more transparent and loses its youthful colour and glow. While all these changes are taking place, gravity is also at work, pulling at the skin and facial muscles causing it to sag. Hormones, sun exposure and smoking also affect how the facial skin looks. The end result is the skin becomes creased and folded.
